Sorry, but I assume the picture got axed by the administrator.  It was showing the
lower (inlet) connection to my 20B water pump.  There is a plug just next to
the lower wp inlet.  This is where I connected the return (suction) from my expansion tank.

It sounds like your radiator arrangement is very similar to mine.  (aluminum cross-flow, tilted, etc.)
You can copy the 5.3 liter LS1 Chevrolet pickup configuration, which is what I did.
This is the small-block 327ci V-8 with aluminum heads.  There is no cap on the radiator at all.
The only cap in the whole system is on the expansion tank.  They tap off the uppermost
point of the return tank on the radiator (big hose to wp is on the bottom) with a 3/8" line
that attaches to the expansion tank.  Then there's a line coming off the bottom of the
expansion tank that T's back into the water pump inlet.  Very simple, and effective.
In over 100K miles, I have never had to add coolant, or had my LS1 engine overheat.
