This is why you might want to consider something other than the "Egg Subie"
redrive.
A friend of mine and his girlfriend were returning from the Bahamas IFR in
an RV-9 with the Subie engine and redrive. He had about 350 hours on the
plane and engine at the time.
He was vectored by ATC to a 12 mile final at 3K feet. Suddenly the engine
revved up and the prop stopped. He reported Mayday and glided into a field
that was covered with brush about 2-3 feet high. The front gear caught some
brush and flipped him upside down. You can see the condition of the front
gear in the picture.
Neither of them was seriously injured. I think he might have been
unconscious for a short time, but the problem was that they both were
drenched in gasoline and with the plane upside down, they were unable to get
out. They were in this condition for about a half hour until a helicopter
landed and rescue folks cut a hole in the side of the canopy to drag them
out of the plane.
This crash happened at the end of an almost 100 mile overwater flight and
within 3 minutes of touchdown. There are many reasons that they should have
died in this crash and yet only had minor injuries!
Don't let friends fly with Subie redrives!
