We'll, Ed has had so many "harrowing experiences" that I'm getting them
mixed up. :-)

Well, Bobby, on the Austin trip, I did have an engine-out 7 mile glide
into Selma AL old military airport (forget its name), but after figuring out
it was because an electrical switch which controlled charging of the battery
had ..ah-hem, gotten “misplaced”, I continued on to Austin and the
rotary flyin. So this engine out was not on the trip to Granbury and
Bill Eslick – that was the “.... cold as hell and almost no fuel left flight”
But, what the heck it was just as far back home (well, almost) as onward
to Austin and not as much fun to miss all you guys – who keep reminding me of
my maturity {<wlEmoticon-smilewithtongueout[1].png>>

And if I recall correctly, on the flight down, you earned
the right to keep the "Dead-stick Landing Award" for another
year.

Wasn't
that the gathering at Grandbury, just south of Dallas? Temps near
freezing and the wind was blowing like the devil. The Austin fly-in was
at Breakaway Airpark (Dennis' place) and had really nice weather.
I
always blame it on my spouse, figuring that she might learn to fly/land a
nose gear aircraft where a tail dragger was out of the question. Turns
out she would never even take one flight in it
{<wlEmoticon-openmouthedsmile[1].png>)
But,
that was one exciting takeoff in the wee hours of the morning, taxing up to
the fuel pump had been a chore with cut grass jamming the wheels and simply
sliding alone with locked wheels on the wet, cut grass. Then came take
off time, pour the coal to the engine and slowly, slowly began to
accelerate, I was just about to abort when I hit a bump and became airborne
– so figured once in the air might as well stay in the air. That was
when we all flew to Austin Texas (Charlie, Tracy and me), it was the longest
bumpiest, coldest flight I have ever been on. Landed with 6 gallons of
fuel – but, the gathering made it worth while – even flying a tri cycle

Ed,
That's
why friends don't let friends fly tri-cycles.

There's
no one actively monitoring the freq on the ground (private, non-towered
field); perhaps that's why no freq is listed.
Of course, all the '
private airport, land at your own risk, etc etc' cover-our-behinds language
applies. :-)
But it is 4800 feet of turf in very good condition.
We've had a Velocity, several King Airs, an MU-2, even a DC3, (and a blimp)
all land (and depart) safely.

Charlie,
I’m
looking forward to the flyin. What’s the CTAF? It’s not listed in
Foreflight.

Reminder: Rotary/alternative engine flyin
invitation
We're one month out, so I thought I'd post a reminder
about the upcoming engine gathering here in Mississippi.
If you
haven't RSVP'd yet, please drop me a line at ceengland7@gmail.com,
or mcsophie@gmail.com, or just give us a call at 601-879-9596 & let us know
that you're thinking about coming. I'm trying to get a head count of us
rotorheads before having Patrick Panzera post something to the other
alternative engine groups.
If you have something you're willing to
talk about (even a 5 minute presentation), please let me know. These
gatherings are great social experiences, but we also learn a lot by seeing
others' work. (I know that I have.)
Feel free to call or email if
you need additional info.
Thanks,
Charlie &
Tupper
