Not since my "AI" buddy came over with this buzz box and TDC finder and we set it a few weeks ago.

You are correct in that I can't use the markings on the ring gear because they don't equate to the true location of TDC.  As strong as the engine runs I really at this point will get a hold of the gauge / wiring mfg and see what they think.  I really bet it must be an issue where my gauge just isn't calibrated worth a hoot to the gauge which came with the a/c.
 
If this line of troubleshooting fails to come up with a solution, then I'll begin with the basics as you suggest and recheck timing, etc..
