The Mazda system has only one scavenge section. It requires a very
different front cover that is part of the system and the pump is gear driven
rather than chain driven and runs backwards. All up it runs about $4,000
installed. Most builders will use it if you insist on one. I have seen one on a
racer in 30 years. They work fine, but are hard to find and have zero parts
commonality with anything. You can order all of the Moroso pieces one at a time
and probably Peterson and Aviaid as well. And the circle track web sites have
Moroso and Petersons used for cheap. Even if you buy a used one with a Chevy
engine stuck in it, they are dead simple to rebuild. The other, less obvious
advantage over the factory race pump, is that you cannot change the speed of
that pump should you want more scavenge or pressure volume. Note that the rings
and rotors for these pumps seem to be all the same size if not the same actual
manufacturer.
In the early years I used a home made scavenge pump made from a TR-6 oil
pump, and used the stock oil pump for pressure. There was just no money for such
things as real dry sump systems. It did work just fine.
Make sure your sump tank has a big breather tube diameter and is fitted
with an air filter. The tank volume need only be a bit more than what the wet
sump would have carried. Tall and thin is the way to go.
The more air space above the oil level the better. An aluminum fire
extinguisher bottle is nice. Since no pressure is involved round is not
required. Return oil run over a flat baffle before falling into the oil is nice
to remove foam and bubbles. Return oil at a tangent to the centerline as
well.

your opinion is the Mazda factory dry sump system better then the Moroso 3
stage Dry sump . It seems that by time I get all the parts purchased for the
Moroso version I might be sneeking up on the cost of the factory race version.
Can these be purchased somewhere easiliy. Your
thoughts?
