Welcome Timothy,

It is great to hear about your project, especially so since you are only a couple of hundred miles away.

Another thing you might consider trying in addition to Ed's good advice, is to utilize the injector backup function.  With the engine operating below the staging MAP in the normal configuration, it was only using the primary injectors.  If you force the system to use just the secondary injectors by engaging the injector backup configuration, this might tell you if one or more of the primary injectors is not working properly.  Of course it is possible for one or more of the secondary injectors to also be malfunctioning, but that would be unusually bad luck.

Hi Timothy

Always great to welcome, lurkers and hear about their success.  Great bird to have a 20B for a power plant.

The cold start doubles the flow (on time) of the all of the injectors.  I suspect you may find that one or more of your injectors may not be firing.  Have you tried the injector diagnostic mode (can not  remember if its mode 0 or 1 now).  But, in any case your manual will tell you which mode is diagnostic mode.  Punch that on and then walk around and listen using mechcanics steroscope (if you are lucky enough to have access to one)  - a long shank screw drive can also work - or feel each injector ( if you can reach them) while the diagnostic mode is causing them to fire. You should find all six clicking away - or  You may find one or more that is not doing its share.  Could be a more complex problem, but I like to identify the cause with as little work as possible.

Again, Welcome

Ed

Subject: [FlyRotary] RV-10 20B First Start

All,

This is my first post to the forum, but I have utilized the archive to gather information and assist me through my RV-10 build process.  All the information in this forum has been tremendous.

I started constructing my RV-10 in Oct 2006  while stationed at Coast Guard Air Station North Bend, OR.  I continued to build it while I was stationed in Jacksonville FL and I finally have it in a hangar out here in Colorado Springs CO.  The aircraft has been all the way across the US on the ground.  I am glad to say that I finally got it started yesterday 25Jun11.  It started right up, but had to keep the cold start on the EC3 in order for it to run smoothly. The EM3 was working as advertised and oil pressure and temp was excellent.

I did another start today, still had to keep the cold start on.  I quickly changed it to MODE 3 and attempted to increase the injector flow rate.  This was a task, she did not want to run and boy was she rough.  I continued to increase the injector flow rate, but I could not get to idle smoothly.  I went back to MODE 0 and turned the cold start back on and she smoothed out.  It was 95 degrees today here in Colorado Spring and I shut her down as water temp reach 200. Oil temp was only reading 160.  I have not completed the duct work for the Radiator yet, but it will be completed here shortly, but for now, I will continue to do my short ground runs in an attempt to get her idling smoothly.  These past few days have been very satisfying.  4.5 years turning out great.
