I tried to verify the static timing (using the no-suction/no-pressure
method to find TDC). It seems to be around 30 degrees BTDC. what should I be looking at for optimal timing?

Whatever works best. I usually go up to 5000 ft or so on a dead calm day, set 24" MP (no vacuum advance there or higher), trim the plane for level flight then advance the timing for max rpm (digital tach needed). If any step of timing advance does not result in an rpm increase, back off the timing 1 step and leave it there. Mazda's numbers are good. This usually happens at around 24 - 25 BTDC of ACTUAL ignition timing.
DO NOT confuse static timing of the CAS with ignition advance. There is NO relationship between them.
