While I
had it apart, I modified the oil pickup tube. I pull the screen
off,
and cut the welds on it's mount plate with a dremel cut-off wheel.
Then I fluted the end by pushing it up against a ball hammer and tapping
around the the edges with another. The I slid the plate to the end
and
tack welded it solid. A little more tapping on the ball to give
the
plate some roundness.
This is what you recommend

Here is the drawing for the street cars. Your idea is OK, but a nice 3/8"
bead around the edge of the tube now and then radius that into a trumpet bell
shape and polish to chrome like finish. The "O" ring thing is not required, I
just like to do stuff like that. You can lap the flange dead flat on a flat
piece of glass and some 400 wet or dry silicone carbide paper, just bolt it on
with no sealant and no gasket. With no gasket there can be no gasket failure. A
dead flat flange needs no gasket. Torque the bolts to just the spec, so you do
not deform the new flat flange, and safety wire them.
