Thomas,
One of the first things I would do is make sure the powers that be in the Sport
Class will not restrict you to a traditional piston engine (like certain auto groups did
when the early rotarys were beating their B#%%'s) or penalize you with extra weight,
etc............Then the next problem in my mind will be finding a prop reduction unit
that will stand up that much power...........Tracy Crook will be the first to tell you that
his RD1X units were never designed for that much power..........IMHO

Very Interesting and Ambitious Project Though !...........I am sure the Rotary Group
will follow and pull for you and offer all the help they can............

I  am newby... I am building a Questair Venture. I am installing a 20B. I want to Turbo it. My goal is 500 HP,I want to race it at Reno at some point in the Sport Class. Anyone out there doing or has done anything similar. Would appreciate any help or advise about your setup etc. My airframe is close to needing some power.

Here you go everyone: The engine should be stamped on all the rotor housings and sideplates. Look on the top of the rotor housings where is says "Mazda 20B"

Pre A code: 3 digit  numbers only, no letter
A code : Letter A and 3 digit #
B code : Letter B and 3 digit #
All of the above are small dowel pin land motors

C code: letter C and 3 digit #
D code : letter D and 3 digit #

The C and D code have the upgraded sideplates, thicker dowel pin lands. Approx: 4mm thicker

Thomas,

Try Brian Galloway in Calif.........He deals in Mazda parts and is very knowledgeable in

the 20B models and the differences between them.........Improvements were made in the

year models............For our use in aircraft the upgrades probably are not as important as

we are not severely stressing our engines like the racers (Auto) do.........I do know that the

later model 20B's sell at a premium...........The last time I corresponded with him he had

both early and late 20B's for sale............I bought a 20B auto trans bell housing from him

(My 13B "Cosmo" uses it between Tracy's RD1C and engine like "Bulent" of this group

.....See photo) attached)..........FWIW

Pat,

If your core engine still has the waterpump on it count the number of bolts

on the pump........86-88 13B has 7 WP bolts...........89-91 has 8 WP bolts.....

93-95 13B has an all aluminum WP.......This is quick and dirty but there are

other ways if WP is missing...........The 86-91 WP is cast iron bolted to alum

housing.........

Hey gang,

I have a core engine I need to identify.
Are there any numbers on the web I can look up?

Thanks!
