I'm not recommending Teflon tape in this application because of the
shredding problem, but it is useful and works well in other
applications.  I will admit that I did use Teflon tape a in a couple of
places when installing the rotary in the plane.  It was handy and the
shredding problem mostly occurs on reassembly after disassembly.

Some time ago (years) I mentioned to someone (don't remember who or
where) about the problems I had getting Teflon tape to seal pipe
threads.  He asked me how many times I wrapped the tape around the
threads.  "Two or three" I said.  "Use at least 6 layers" he said.  I
haven't had a problem sealing pipe threads with Teflon tape since.
I've also had good luck with a Teflon based pipe dope which doesn't
have the shredding problem.   I used Hylomar on a lot of the pipe thread
joints when I put the engine in the car.  I haven't seen any leaks yet,
but haven't ran the engine either.  First start is coming up soon.
