Subject: [FlyRotary] Change of plans
(again)
Greetings,
Well, after 9 weeks, with
no word of when my turbo would arrive, I decided to cancel the
order. Yes, as amazing as it sounds, I've now floundered back
to the non-turbo plan. I won't bore you with all the decision
process, but the bottom line is that I'll get the plane back to a far more
reasonable weight and balance without the turbo. If I need (relative
term) more power, I'll just get one of Tracy's 2..85 drives, and turn up the
RPM's to 7500 or so. The engine is ported, and Bruce said it
would make good power to that RPM. I figure I can get all the power
I could want, with less risk to the engine. I won't have the high
altitude advantage that a turbo would give, but realistically, I
don't fly much over 10k ft anyway.
In other news,
I received my one way valves from McMaster Carr today.
They're 12 oz each, which seems pretty heavy, but they're fairly
compact, have good specs, and were only $20 each. I'm sure
they'll work fine.
Cheers,
Rusty (should have paid
attention to Ed's intake info
<g>)
Hi, Rusty.....I can
understand your reluctance to install the turbo. I think if we can make
these engines purr along smoothly at a reasonable fuel burn, we just
might be better off without the extra weight and complexity of a turbo.
I was told by George Graham, who has a 13b in his side-by-side E-Racer canard,
that he can take off and climb at 1/2 throttle, and that at 150 mph he
can open the throttle and push you back in your seat. Not bad for a
normally aspirated 13b with carburetors, no less. He said he would
do even better with EFI. For now, I am also planning on going
turbo-less. A lot less effort on the planning and setup, wastegates,
etc. But why am I telling YOU this? You've already GOT that
T-shirt. Thanks for keeping us informed with your trials and
tribulations. Really curious to hear how the EWP's work. Take
care. Paul, the radiator-challenged SQ2000
builder.
