I kept the string near the center of the sealing area and on the outside of the bolt holes.

Hi Steve, I was wondering where you imbedded the string … inside the bolt holes, outside the bolt holes or weaved in and out around the bolt holes in an “S” or snake pattern? I redid my oil pan with Ultra-grey but no string; however, if I ever take it all apart again I’d consider your method.
