I use an Earls stintered bronze filter downstream from my pumps.  You are right that they clog.  every 100 hrs or so I start to notice a decrease in the overall flow rate, then maybe a small drop in pressure.  The element always looks perfectly clean, but I just give it a good cleaning and it is good for another 100 hrs.

Mike, are these the small blue circular Earls filters?
I had problems with these. I would regularly get fuel starvation / low mixture at high throttle settings. I finally traced the problem to the the sintered bronze elements that looked clean but were, in fact, partially blocked by invisible tiny particles. I replace the bronze elements with stainless mesh filters and had no more problems.
