I was aware of Larry David's problems, and also Chris's problems with the Jeffco over ezpoxy. Am not familiar with the KIS at Mason-Jewett. I operate a list-serve for KIS airplanes, and it had not been mentioned. He may not be on the list.

My plane used Aero-poxy 2032 resin, which has been over coated with Jeffco 9700-FCR. A Hysol product was used to bond the bottom wing skin to the spar/ribs. The bond lines could not be covered with the Jeffco.

I believe many Lancairs use the Jeffco also.

Years ago we did a test of some sample coupons coated with the two epoxies, and the Jeffco withstood the gasohol, but did have some weight-gain, this bothered me, because it would indicate that the alcohol was penetrating the epoxy, and therefore could affect the underlying base-coat.

As a result, my tanks are labeled to accept 87-100 Octane, no alcohol.  I will use avgas unless I can find a source of Mo-gas without alcohol.

Thanks for the heads up.
David, could you pass on the information on the KIS driver? I would like to be in communication with him.

Another Kiss driver here at Mason Jewett Airport has debris in tanks, do not know the extent but he is cutting the tanks open now to find out, already borescoped them and was not happy, nice aircraft, nice guy one of our very active members EAA Chapter 55.  David R Cook RV6A ROTARY.

Subject: [FlyRotary] KIS epoxy type

Bill;

The current issue of Contact! magazine has an article regarding serious damage to the epoxy fuel tanks on a KIS that the author (Larry David) concluded was the result of using 10% ethanol fuel.  He didn’t specify what type of epoxy was used, and his response to my e-mail to him was that he did not build the plane and didn’t know what epoxy was specified for the KIS.

It is of interest since Chris, our rotary powered Velocity friend, had a similar nightmare with his fuel tanks.  Thought maybe you’d know.  In Chris’s case it was Jeffco coating over EZ-poxy that peeled off.  In this case it was ‘whatever’ epoxy coating over ‘whatever’ epoxy; and the fillets under the coating, and the wing spar were also damaged.  Perhaps you are familiar with the case.
