Earnest, in the early nineties I drove a Ford
pickup truck while working for a natural gas storage utility, it had a tank
about 20 in. by 48 in. in the bed. This vehicle cost about $35,000 to
convert and would travel about 60 miles or about 4 hours use on a start of 3600
pounds, which took about 15 minutes to charge. The truck had a 12 gallon
gasoline tank as a duel fuel vehicle. The first compressor was a light unit
about the size of a home air conditioner unit, which any home owner could hide
in his bushes and fuel his vehicle every night from his NG heating supply, this
unit lasted about two weeks. The next compressor was a skid mounted
unit, approx. 8' x 16' and was a maintenance nightmare. As I recall the
government paid the initial cost to convert the vehicles and nearly as much to
reconvert to gasoline because it just wasn't a practical application. Us
peasants in the outback would soon be traveling Amish style.
