Is the power output of a DC motor linearly proportional to the voltage applied? If this is the case, then this start-alt would be a direct drop-in for what we're talking about. 20Hp @ 42V -> 5.7Hp @ 12V. It probably has the typical 1" splined shaft that would make the installation a breeze.
