It is my communications skills that are lacking. So, here is a picture.
I read again of a muffler failure. I was not familiar with the Hushpower muffler so I looked up the brand.
It is not round, but kind of a flattened oval shape. Not good. It has to stand up to 12,000 small hand grenades per minute, so it needs to look like a pressure vessel. Even the Mazda folks had trouble with the muffler problem. The factory race muffler was to be mounted under the rear bumper. Its cooler back there.
The muffler was round, about 10 inches, but it had flat ends, like a short glass packed home made looking thing. It had an empty room where gasses entered, to allow for the shock wave to drop to subsonic. Then a flat bulkhead with a perforated tube and a conventional look to the rear, and another flat bulkhead. These seemed to hold up well for a season or so, then the front bulkhead would worry out the welds and the muffler would fall off. So, it was round, and that was good, but not with flat end plates. Conical would have been better, but hemispherical segments would have been ideal. Length can be added where diameter would be a problem. Tubing after the muffler can be much thinner than in front of the muffler. Should the tubing after the muffler extend further aft, unattenuated sound would have less affect in the cabin. Just a thought.
