I suspect because a filament in a light may burn out and then the dynamo would not have a place to dump power and eventually fry it self ? Remember the old Lucas systems in the BSA and Nortons. The weak point in the sistem is the rectifier. But if they have a good sact hose with air they have proven to stand up to the use. The heat sink can take the excess power and it is designed to work with the dynamo you just have to keep it cool.  I have to admit that electrics and electronics are an obscure art for this simple brain. I cant see it till it sparks on my finger and gives me a wallop. I am merely copying elements that I know have worked for others and contemplating adapting them to our use.

Scot/Michael,
Why not run a light rather, like they do on Motorbikes rather than dump excess power.
