A method of machining very high precision holes or slots with pieces submerged in oil or a water mixture, and electrodes made of wire or carbon rods used to ablate away unwanted material. A kind of reverse welding procedure. Used in placing the windows in hydraulic selector sets. (slide and sleeve sets) in hydraulic controls and aircraft and submarine hydraulic systems. Removing broken taps and studs used to be a common use for EDM in small shops. A computer controlled head lowers a carbon rod into the center of your tap, and it vanishes. Leaving 4 little columns of teeth. Can be done on heat treated metals as little heat reaches the surrounding material.
Electrical Discharge Machining EDM.
