Where does the fear of pump cavitation come from? Is that speculative or have some guys inadvertently choked off the pump inlet with small diam hose instead of OEM size?

Years ago on the ACRE list there was discussion of cavitation and photos of some fairly severely eroded pump housing and impellors.  I don’t recall what background information went with it, but it was enough to  suggest some precautions were in order when considering continuous high rpm operation, especially at high altitudes where the system pressure could be less than normal atmospheric with the usual 15# cap setup.
