On my cooling= =20 system I have re<= SPAN=20 style=3D"FONT-SIZE: 11pt; COLOR: blue; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana">inforced silicone= =20 compound hoses (blue stuff from McMaster-Carr).  My system is set up=20= with=20 dual caps in series with the potential of 38 psi max pressure.  I put= the=20 hoses on, tightened them to what seemed right, then pressurized to system=20= to=20 38 psi.  A couple of the connections leaked, so I got my =C2=BC=E2= =80=9D drive ratchet=20 with the appropriate socket, and tightened the clamp until the leak=20 stopped.  I=E2=80=99m guessing it was about 30 =E2=80=93 35 inch lbs.=   I checked=20 them a few weeks later and found I could give most of them another partial= =20 turn to about the same torque=20 level.  Haven=E2=80=99t touched them in the year of flying since, and= there have=20 been no leaks, and the hoses still look as good as when they went on. = ;=20 I=E2=80=99ll probably replace most of them within the next year - just=20 because.

Al and all,
One of the best suggestions I've seen came from Carrol Smith's Prepare=20= to=20 Win book. He suggested that you should only use the stainless clamps with th= e=20 full through holes for the worm. (hard to get anything else these days) The=20 tightness is about right on a rubber hose when the hose bits poking through=20= the=20 worm drive slots are flush or above the level of the clamp material. Of cour= st=20 you must check for leaks etc.. and YMMV, and all the usual disclaimers. The=20= worm=20 offers enough mechanical advantage that the actual torque reqirement would v= ary=20 so much with various materials as to be hard to predict. A silicone covered=20= hose=20 might be slipperyer or stickier than a rubber one. When it stops leaking it=20= is=20 tight enough!
