This isn't an unusual spot hardening technique. I knew the slots were hardened. Using this style makes sense. Mazda made the rotary one of the prized engineering spots in the company, the guys working there are not dummies! Several very sophisticated techniques are used. Did you notice the mention of computer flow programs for the castings? Cutting edge stuff.

Interesting. I never heard about the high frequency RF hardening of the apex
seal slot area before.....!
