Some A&P texts say .045 on critical items. (Prop bolts, Flywheel bolts etc) I have never needed anything bigger than .032 ss wire. On the motorcycles with small fasteners and low torques I used .025 for everything except brake caliper bolts. It is your behind, use what makes you comfortable. Any bolt that can come loose after being torqued correctly, and then safety wired correctly, is probably broken anyway. Even then the wire would usually pervent it from doing more damage.
