Mine is set up just like the drawing, minus the lamp, and switch.  Actually, I put the switch in the circuit originally, and found that it was just no use, so I got rid of it.   
 
So basically you hooked both wires to 12V - right?
Are you using a contactor and crowbar setup to diconnect the B lead in case of overvoltage?
Jusr curious - why not use the alternator warning since it's there.
