the idiot light circuit probably provides a ground to turn the light on.   
 
 Actually, I think its just the opposite Rusty.   
 
Sorry, I wasn't very clear on my original statement.  What I meant was that the idiot light circuit (within the alternator) provides a ground to turn on the light.  We of course have to provide 12V on our end of the wire. 
 
Mine is set up just like the drawing, minus the lamp, and switch.  Actually, I put the switch in the circuit originally, and found that it was just no use, so I got rid of it.
