Subject: [FlyRotary] Duct Coordinates was
: [FlyRotary] Re: Oil cooler duct.
Too Late, Bobby, I calculated based on a 19" width
{:>)
I have sent the coordinate graphs to your e mail as they
are a tad larger than Marv permits. I had to embed them in a MS word
document - tried converting to jpeg with PaintBrush but it didn't work
out.
So the one with Height data is looking at the duct from
the side (assuming the core is mounted with the core face perpendicular to the
direction of flight). The Width data is looking at the duct from
top/bottom. So if you shaped a foam core to these coordinates and then
rounded the edges to smooth corners, this should give you a good duct for your
core.
Things come together at the inlet around 8-9" with a 10"
wide opening and a 3" wide opening - for cosmetic reasons you could make the
opening slightly wider and height slightly less just so they give you an
opening around 30 sq inches. So that looks like about 1.5"
above/below center line for a 3" total and 5" left/right of center line for a
10" width at about 8-10" out from the core.
The streamline duct is to be preferred over my Pinched
duct where possible, but once you start getting shorter than about 6" the
truncated Streamline duct starts to show a lot of the core to the airstream
and it is my opinion the drag goes up considerably. The pinched duct is
basically a compromise duct for those with very short 3-6" duct runner
space.
Hope this helps.

Ed,
My notes say 18".

Hi Bobby,
You actually have sufficient distance to probably come
pretty close to a streamline duct. Tell me how wide the core you
may use from Ed - the same 19" as the stock or different? I'll see
what I can come up with.

duct.
Ed,
It looks like
I have about 10-12 inches of duct between the chin scoop and oil cooler
face. The cooler is a stock mazda but I am considering a slightly larger
one that Ed K. makes. 6.5" tall vs 5" Any suggestions on how you
would shape this duct using the pinched duct approach?
Thanks....
