Bill, I have done it both ways.  I have used just a gasket and have used just the grey  RTV (You don't really need the red on the intake manifold although you do need the high temp red stuff if using it to seal the exhaust manifold) on the intake manifold.  Either way seems to do the job just fine.  In fact, I am currently using a gasket held in place by the grey RTV (belts and suspenders {:>))

I meant to ask at Shady Bend, what are people using for the gasket on the intake manifold. Seems like I remember someone just using Red RTV, but I wanted to double check.
