That being said, modern alternators and internal regulators are sooooo very reliable, that it's almost  
paranoid to think they will fail in a way that will damage anything in your electrical system.   
I disagree, Rusty. I've had a fried battery due to overvoltage. One minute we're driving along, next minute the car just died. Nothing. In the plane I used one of Bob Nuckoll's overvoltage units to drive a breaker for the contactor and cut the B lead. I agree that fire from a severed alternator is pretty unlikely. (I hope).
