Ken, The interesting thing is that real life is just the opposite of what you might think. Since we had sponsorship and results were demanded, (as opposed to requested), we never cleaned plugs. We would open a new box of NGK's at the start of the weekend and gap them all. If a plug looked even questionable we would replace it with a brand new one. Several of the team members kept several cars and personal motorcycles in fairly fresh plugs from the takeouts though.
