"Unfortunately, I'm still a wee bit forward of the forward CG limit, so there's probably some ballast required for the tail.  What was that... I think I just heard Tracy screaming :-)"

Sounds like back-up battery time to me;-)  Mike C.

Funny you should mention that.  I've been considering a few options.

-One is just to add the minimum amount of lead (about 5 lb) as far aft as possible.  This could be eliminated if I remove the turbo, cooling fan, etc.  This is probably the most likely option.

-Two is to add a backup battery next to the primary battery in the aft end of the baggage compartment.  I haven't quite figured out how I'd hook this up, since I'd really want it to be a completely separate power source (no alternator or connection to the other battery).  The Odyssey batteries are so very good that it could be charged on the ground periodically, and would be good when you needed it (hopefully never).  Still thinking about this, but it would mean adding 15 pounds in the baggage compartment, rather than 5 pounds in the tail.

- Finally, the RV-3 doesn't have counterbalanced elevators.  This just seems terrible to me, since I was used to the fully balanced controls on the RV-8.  I've given some thought to adding counterbalances to the elevators, but unfortunately, that's not the simplest of modifications, and there are aerodynamic concerns with the way the tips are made.  I probably won't do this now.

So that's more than you really wanted to know, right :-)
