It's a little hard to tell, since I don't post in HTML, but I suspect that the HTML handler doesn't like top posting and thinks the additional material is part of the original message. Or it might be that Mark put the "whitespace" in after he had already started replying at the top line (again, making it part of the original). He might try putting in a coupld of blank lines first, then backing up to add text.
In Tracy's case, I suspect that he didn't put whitespace below the message before he started adding text.

(and folks wonder why I use plain text)
You're probably right. When I reply, I click after the last thing I want to leave quoted & drag all the way to the bottom of the original post. Then, with that stuff highlighted, I hit <enter>. That cleans up all the old footer info & that gives me white space & a left margin to type from.
I recently discovered that if I'm forced to use 'WebMail' to access my Bellsouth.net email from another computer, all bets are off on what happens. I've had it do to me what happened to Tracy even when I was careful to use the above technique. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the chaotic looking posts are caused by web based email clients.
FWIW, my big gripe with html, colored text, etc is that it quickly becomes impossible to tell who said what & in what order. Old style plain text may seem boring, but with staggered indented bars/chevrons/whatevers it's always easy to see the order of postings. I'm a pretty hard-core libertarian & have no desire to see this 'regulated', but I'm sure that I've missed useful info because I've given up & deleted Tower-of-Babel postings.

anarchy over regulation (but consensus would be nice)
