Hi
Rusty & All;
Good to hear the tiny tach works. Now we have 2 tach
methods for us with the EC2/LS1 combo. I borrowed an optical tach today and
tested my solution. It works fine. I made a quick spreadsheet to convert figures
from the 2 blade optical tach to 3 blade X 2.17 compared to indicated to give %
error averaged over 8 different engine speeds. Results are only a 3.5%
error. Close enough for me.
Final inspection is scheduled for the weekend. Speaking of
fuel gauges. I built all of my tanks with capacitive fuel plates, and planned to
make my own converter using plans from one of Jim Weirs old KitPlanes articles
to use a standard fuel gauge. When Tracy announced his EM2 I had abandoned this
idea. Now I'm resurrecting this again. I've bought all the components and
designed a board, but due to the cost of having boards made and not sure
about the difficulties of making my own, I'm sort of wavering on this idea. My
header tank (4.5 usg) has a sight tube, but the inspector hasn't been clear as
to whether he will accept this without an indication on the main tanks. I'd
really like to wait for the EM2 before doing the fuel levels, since the test
period of 50 hours will keep me within range of base airport with header tank
alone.
I ended up with 1196lbs empty weight. More than I wanted,
but not too bad when you consider I have 7 fuel tanks & associated plumbing,
gear mounts for both TD & TG, muffler, muffler housing, full upholstery,
turbocharger and a few other extras. Definitely not the aerobatic machine that
you're trying to achieve, but it should fulfill it's mission. It's only a little
more than a 100 lbs more than the factory 9a, but with a lot more power
& range.
What should I expect for a static RPM with a 76" 3
blade prop set at approx. mid range (60"). I can get 5000 RPM with about 2-3psi
boost. This is not quite full throttle, but I don't really want to boost much at
this altitude as I'm running the 9.4:1 rotors. Also the plane starts dragging at
this, so I don't really want to push it any harder. Reading the archives I find
Ed reports a static of 5200-5400 RPM, but that's a 2 blade ( ? X ? ). Tommy
reported 4350 RPM with a 3 blade ( ? X 60) @30"MAP.
