Why are they at different potentials? Are you using a single point
grounding scheme?

don't think there's such a thing as a true single point grounding.
Every wire from a component to the ground is a different length and resistance,
so there WILL be differences. I have two grounds - one at the firewall close to
the batteries, and one at the panel. They're connected by 14G wire. All the EC2
shielded wires are connected to the EC2 ground.
