Years ago, (40s or 50s, I think) perfect circle made a rig that cut ring grooves a little wider and squared them up where you could use an over width, thick, whatever ring to get the straight up and down side wall containment of the ring.  It would also knurl little blocks saying perfect circle on the sides of the piston to hold a little more oil and keep the piston from rocking, if you had a little too much slack there.  Now, I would think the same principle would work here, if you can get straight and square in what ever the widest seal width would be. JMHO
