Heat is also the main cause of the Mazda coils going belly up.
The balast resistor burns out. I believe at least two people on the
lists have had this problem recently. Trick is to keep the the coils
cool.
It is ALWAYS good advice to keep electrical components as cool as possible,
even if they were designed to mount directly to the engine. The rule of
thumb in the electronics industry is that failure rate doubles for every 10
degrees C increase in temperature. I have a cool air blast tube going to my
coil/igniters for this very reason.
