as far as I know, same pumps in series do not increase flow rate.

Why do they have to be in series?  Don't ANY of these folks make a
viable check valve?

It's just the easiest way to do the test.  BTW, I was reviewing some old EWP posts today, and noticed that Bob tested his pumps in series, and parallel, and found that series had a higher flow rate.  That might be specific to his pumps, rather than a general rule, but the point was that parallel isn't necessarily better.
