Of course this isn't all about the group awarding a prize to the best technology and the loser getting tossed. And for me, it's not about getting validation if I can convince Paul to go Ellison. Or avoiding shame for bringing up this dumb idea. For me, I would trade 'some' horsepower for a system that >> I <<, with so much to learn about these systems, could successfully implement and operate without getting hurt or aircraft significantly damaged. There may just be a few people out there, like me, who you wouldn't want to fly with if they installed an EFI system. Or even fly near your neighborhood. I'm feeling the odds are not insignificant that despite my best efforts I'll have a power-based incident. I'm not easily scared, done some flying I should be careful who I discuss with, and already had one exciting emergency landing with 7 souls aboard that I like to talk about during hangar flying. I'm just trying to be smart about safety. Just to balance the 'Damn the torpedos, Go EFI', all the birds leaving their nests do not survive their first flight. I'll omit my story about one, nice, well regarded guy I knew personally (thru another mail list) who's first and last flight was announced by the NTSB. Ellisons are much simpler to install. They do have operating advantages (operates at 0 voltage). Apparently, with little or no venturi, they are not succeptable to ice build-up, only ice ingestion. Avgas only. Their most likely will be a power penalty, amount still in debate. They do have a couple idiosyncracies(sp) to work with. No nifty computer displays and controls. I could only afford one. I have not finalized my decision on either direction. The EFI industry won't collapse if I can get adequate power thru one of these things. How many of those guys wanted to trash out that "new fangled" alternator and rush out to get a generator? The comparitive level of technology is about the same EFI to Eliason.
