Gentlemen,
I've been following this thread, and find that I now have something new to
worry about on long trips. Not wanting to experience aileron loss, I was
thinking about possible solutions to the issue, other than eliminating the
belts. What do you think about installing an aluminum cover over the push
tubes in the firewall area. I don't think that it would be very difficult
to fabricate a lightweight cover. It could even be made out of fiberglass,
for those of us who don't have mind working with it.
Kevlar might be a good choice to protect from impact. Tough stuff.

The encouragement is very heartening, Paul. So far I have nothing but
an idea, some napkin scribbling, a LOT of guesses and a contact for an
electrical engineer that specializes in generators. My biggest concern
is "what does a rotating magnetic field do to the ignition timing
pickup?" How close can you put an alternator/generator to this thing
and still get reliable ignition timing?
