Subject: [FlyRotary] Re: Spark Plugs

Ian,
was amazed to see you are using conventional plugs in your rotary.  Didn't even know they would fit without the ground electrode hitting the bottom of the plug recess.

Did you always use these?  What was your experience with the rotary specific plugs (BUR-7/9 EQ) if not?

Tracy

Tracy, there are a few  "Standard" spark plugs which while their base is 3/4" long, their electrodes will not clip/chip the apex seal.  However, that is by no means true of many/most "Standard" spark plugs. Unless someone is abolutely certain that a spark plug electrode will not stick out into the combustion chamber, they are running a very high probablity of chipping an apex seal meaning a teardown and replacement.  So they shouldn't just stick in a plug to see how it works, it may cause tears and and require $$.

Also, I tried some of the single electrode plugs that Paul Yaw had found would not clip the apex seal  and found they did not live in my  rotary engine.  Mine looked like Ian's after about 10 hours..
I did some research and decided that while I would like to find a plug like the BUR-7/9EQ without the built-in Resistor, I have not been able to locate any at this time.

Speaking of spark plugs, while out flying yesterday and putting the third hour on the RD-1B, I had a couple of episodes of the infamous spark plug "SAG".  This set of plugs went a bit longer before showing the symptom perhaps due to my replacement of the old spark plug wires.  So will be sticking in a new set of plugs for the trip.

Weather is looking OK for Saturday at this point,  So put the beer on ice.
