I have a variation on the shelf on the BH at the hydraulic pump. My L-IV-P does not have a solid bulkhead at the aft part of the normal bag area, but a cargo net. (A 6-BID CF "roll bar" has been added there to supply stiffness that would have been supplied by the BH. I have a full floor aft cargo area that can ordinarily accept a large stuffed animal or so. Over the elevator compensator mount is a protective box for my Sierra Flight Systems AHRS unit. This has a rubber pad on the top.
In order to completely prevent anything from getting through the net into the aft control and servo area, I have a door that extends the far aft BH vertically. It flops down onto the AHRS box by the pull of a cable situated just aft of the cargo door. Skis lay on top of that door, and are bungeed in place. The cargo net snugs around the skis to secure the aft area from CG destroying stuff.
It's actually very simple, and didn't take all that long to make.
