My engine of late has been quite oily so I investigated and found it to
be completely missing a crankshaft seal.

Installing this seal is a real bear; I coined several new expletives in
the process of trying to do it.  Then I had an "aha!" experience and I
now can do a seal in about two minutes and I pass this on to you.  Use
TIEWRAPS to install this seal.  Just remember "tiewraps" and you can
figure out the rest in just moments of contemplation.     Greg Nelson
