This may not have the predicted results because COM transmissions are
vertically polarized and NAV signals are horizontally polarized. A vertical
belly antenna would have very poor reception of a glide slope signal. The
good news is that the receivers on modern aircraft radios are quite
sensitive and will work with an antenna from a '60 Impala (bent coat
hanger). On my IV, I flew for a year with one of the NAV antennas connected
backwards (reason # 28 why you should do an annual solo) with no noticeable
effect on performance.

The fact that there are many functional installations similar to the one
with the problems points to the installation, not the design.
