A vertical belly antenna would have very poor reception of a glide slope signal. The good news is that the receivers on modern aircraft radios are quite sensitive and will work with an antenna from a '60 Impala (bent coat hanger). On my IV, I flew for a year with one of the NAV antennas connected backwards (reason # 28 why you should do an annual solo) with no noticeable effect on performance. The fact that there are many functional installations similar to the one with the problems points to the installation, not the design.
