Posted for Lancair, as forwarded by "Julie Jantzer" <juliej@lancair.com>:

BEFORE NEXT FLIGHT!  If your IV or any other Lancair model has a hydraulic system filter (p/n B-4F-60) installed, before your next flight disassemble the filter (use 3/4" wrenches) and discard the sintered metal filter element and the spring.

The filter can be identified as follows

Color: brass

Length: 3"

Diameter: 3/4"

Label: "60 Micron"

Stamped: "Nupro Filter"

The filter has a small capacity and no bypass ability. If it should plug completely, the landing gear and flaps will be locked, and this includes the emergency down handpump system. Removing the filter and spring will restore the system to safe operation. We will review the need for a filter and if it is worth while supply one with sufficient capacity and bypass ability.
