I think it also has to do with the GSM signal being very timing sensitive -
you mention the autobahn and when I go and visit people by car (I live in
Munich) it's pretty much unusable above 120mph (tried up to about 160mph).
Not only does the stream break off intermittently but you also get flanging
(cool sound effect but not what you want during a conversation) - signs of
timing issues. It shouldn't really matter because who would really want to
have a phone conversation at those speeds in a car???
BTW I guess this would all end once cell phones use packetized transfers
like GPRS for voice connections also.
On a different note; Boeing has released a paper describing possible ways
forward in the terrestrial/satellite navigation issue in
http://www.boeing.com/atm/pdf/Detailed_Concepts.pdf, a very interesting read
