I recently experimented (illegally, here in Europe) with my cell phone at 1000ft
alt. at 170 knt in a densely populated area where there must be many ground
stations. The reception kept dropping out - i.e. we could not hear each other
intermittently and the phone showed signal going from max to zero signal at
these times. The call was not always dropped though. 
Do you think this fits with your theory that it's due to the time lag at
transfer between ground stations ? (170knots is "only" twice the speed we
sometimes do on the autobahns here.) Could it be because the antenna pattern of
the ground station has a null vertically upwards; and I was flying though them
frequently? (From their point of view , it's is wasted energy upwards)
