Several other Legacy builders including myself question the need to stiffen the doors further since they are very stiff to begin with. I called Lancair and asked if I could return my old style doors plus some money for the new style doors and was told that they couldn't do that. I then asked how much it would cost to have them perform the mod but they could only say they were very busy in there shop and probably couldn't get to it for a long time. Although the SB looks simple, the drawings were somewhat vague. The whole modification took a lot of time. There is a lot of Dremel work that has to be done and care must be taken not to remove too much material. I decided to delete one BID from the diagonal lay-up and one BID from the full surface lay-up thinking that I could get a better fit over the irregular inner door surface and maybe save a little weight! As I said, I still think the original doors are already very stiff. I am pleased with how my doors turned out. I did the SB mod before releasing my doors and before installing the hinge at the encouragement of another Legacy builder who did not! Rob, I am contemplating an emergency exit through one of my rear windows but have not thought much about it yet. Your idea to make a baggage door which includes the window may be the best way to go since I can just bearly fit through the existing window cut-out and there is no guarantee that my passenger could do the same. Years ago when I worked at Boeing as a structural engineer on the 747 we had a rule of thumb on our aluminum structures which said that if we cut a whole in the fuselage, we had to add new beef up structure around the hole equal to twice the weight of the material removed to make the hole. I don't know how this would apply to our carbon fiber fuselage, but I know that if I put in a baggage door, I will significantly beef up the perimeter of the door. Let's keep in touch on this one....and thanks for the info on the leading edge wing tanks.
