The sanding pad moves back an forth. This usually refers to an air driven vibration sander. An Orbital sander moves it's sanding disc in an orbit or circle. A Random Orbital sander moves it's sanding disc in a random pattern. This prevents swirls on the surface. A Belt Sander move it's sanding belt in a straight line on the surface.
