When all was said and done on my first ES, I spent around $700.00
weighing the airplane! Since I flew it in primer, I had to weigh it twice.
The first time I rented three scales in Corpus Christi, then rented a
trailer to haul them over here (45 miles). They were platform type scales,
so it took a long time to jack all the wheels up high enough to get the
plane on. Quite a production. After the final painting, I flew it to San
Antonio, where I was able to roll onto a nice, hi-tech set of strain
gauge-type scales. The weighing and logbook entry there cost about $350, as
I recall.
I'm wondering how much interest there might be in having a set of
compact rental scales available. I'm toying with the idea of buying a set
(used, if possible), and having them available to the Lancair builders'
network. My idea would be to charge some modest fee plus shipping. If
there were enough demand, one user might be able to ship to the next,
sharing the shipping costs, in effect.
The ACS catalog shows one set of scales (Ruggles) that is non-certified
and costs $310.00; their other set (Evergreen) costs $3995.00. Anyone have
any info on the Ruggles set? The low price and non-certified status make me
suspicious.
If there's much interest in this, maybe you could e-mail me privately
(toucan@The-I.net) and I'll sort of total up to see if it would be worth it.
Meanwhile, if anyone knows of a good set of scales available used, let me
know.
Seems like this is something the factory might be doing for us, no?
