It turns out that the Airwolf and ADC remote oil filter kits are intended for
engines not already equipped with filters. They therefore include an adapter
that bolts onto the engine in place of the oil screen assembly. As the
IO-360 Ijust bought already has a spin-on filter, it seemed foolish to go to
all the effort and expense to buy a new filter adapter to replace the
existing one.
The guys at Airwolf just told me that they have an "oil filter relocation
kit" (part number AFC-K007-F, price $350) which includes essentially a dummy
oil filter that spins on where the oil filter normally goes. This dummy
filter is threaded for hoses leading to a firewall-mounted bracket to ehich
the oil filter spins on. The dummy filter is about 1-1/4 inches long. This
setup is a savings over the kit that includes the standard adapter (AFC-K001,
$495 in the Lancair catalog), plus is easier to install.
Again, hoses are extra.
The only reason I'm doing this (with a long engine mount) is that my
firewall-mounted battery gets real close to the back end of the oil filter
(within 3/8 inch). Relocating it to the firewall solves this problem, as the
battery rack will clear the short dummy filter by about 1-1/2 inches.
Otherwise, I'd save the weight and the money and use the factory spin-on
setup it already has.
(This is exactly the setup that I installed in my Mazda Miata, though that
one was made by someone else. And cost a lot less....)
